The Shih Tzu Guide came to life because, four years ago, I suddenly became a Shih Tzu owner. Sure, I’d taken care of dogs before, but this was the first time I had to care for what we call a “hybrid” dog in my country. (Here, any dog with a breed is called a “hybrid.”)
It all started because my son really wanted a furry companion. Since there aren’t any shelters to adopt from here, we had to buy one. I decided on a small dog, thinking it would be easier for my son, and that’s how Cooper came into our lives. I’m pretty sure he’s not a purebred Shih Tzu, but we love him just the same.
Cooper was just two months old when we brought him home. I was told he could eat any puppy food, but I was nervous about making a mistake. When I was younger, my cousin had a puppy named Choco who suddenly passed away. We didn’t know then, but powdered milk isn’t good for puppies, and it caused Choco to get constipated and have trouble passing stool. I can still remember my cousin crying. That memory stuck with me, so I was extra careful with Cooper.
But even being careful didn’t save me from surprises. Cooper was the cutest little fluffball, but soon he started getting rashes all over. After a lot of trial and error, I found out he was allergic to chicken. Can you believe that? Everything I read said Shih Tzus love chicken, but apparently, Cooper didn’t get the memo. So, no chicken for him.
That’s why I started The Shih Tzu Guide. I wanted to make sure I gave Cooper the best care possible, so I spent hours researching, experimenting, and learning what worked for him. Over time, I realized I could share this knowledge to help other Shih Tzu owners.
Now Cooper’s four years old and thriving. Look at our little Cooper hiking with us. Who said Shih Tzus can’t hike? Don’t worry though, there’s plenty of water for him and snacks too! Seeing him happy and healthy is all the motivation I need to keep learning and sharing through the guide.

This guide is all about my journey with Cooper—full of ups, downs, and lots of lessons. I hope it helps other Shih Tzu owners take great care of their fur babies too.
